15 Evans

Image
Two posts in one day! The second route today is the 15 Evans, our first Etobicoke route, which operates one branch: 15 Evans: Royal York Stn to Sherway This short route serves as one of the few east-west routes in south Etobicoke. note: the 315 extension to Islington was temporary, and the route has returned to regular routing. The Route Westbound buses operate south on Royal York, supplementing 76 Royal York South service. This stretch is mainly single-family homes, besides a few apartments just north of Norseman. Buses then head west on Evans. Until Islington, the road is lined with single-family homes, then it becomes industrial on both sides, including TTC's Queensway Garage. Beyond Bellman, the north side has industrial sites, whereas the south side is single-family homes. The route loops clockwise to Sherway via Evans, the West Mall (serving Trillium Health Queensway), Sherway Drive, Sherway Gardens Road (stopping at the mall terminal), and Sherway Gate. Sights to See Trill...

14 Glencairn

Image
Hello friends! Today's route is the 14 Glencairn, which operates with one branch: 14 Glencairn: Davisville Stn to Caledonia This route bisects the middle of the city, and provides a convenient, albeit infrequent, link between the two sides of Line 1. The Route The route operates from Davisville Station. Westbound buses operate via northwest on Chaplin, passing many single-family homes and a few low-rise apartment blocks. Beyond Eglinton, the route is flanked to the north by a large park, and to the south by high-rise apartments addressed on Shallmar. The buses then travel west on Roselawn for a block, then north on Bathurst, before continuing west on Glencairn. Large single-family homes line both sides of Glencairn. Crossing over the Allen, the bus stops at Glencairn Station. The bus loops clockwise via Lansdowne, Tycos, Caledonia and Glencairn. The route serves a bit of industry on Tycos. 12 Kingston Rd

Image
Hey! I took a day off because, y'know, life, but I'm back for a very confusing route. I mean, it's straightforward, but on a map, the 12 Kingston Rd is a mess. The route operates with four branches.: 12A Kingston Rd: Victoria Park Stn to Kennedy Stn via Variety Village and Brimley 12B Kingston Rd: Victoria Park Stn to Kennedy Stn via Brimley 12C Kingston Rd: Victoria Park Stn to St Clair and Barkdene Hills 12D Kingston Rd: Victoria Park Stn to UofT Scarborough A fifth branch operates during afternoon rush, as a school trip from Neil McNeil: 12E Kingston Rd Express: to Victoria Park Stn Lastly, a sixth(!) branch as the last eastbound trip of the night: 12G Kingston Rd: to Bingham As you can tell by just the number of branches, it's not exact the easiest route to understand. Below is the map, but it is not much help at all. The Route I'm going to separate the branches here to make this easier to understand. First is the 12A and 12B branches. These two branches never...

11 Bayview

Image
Hey friends! Today we look at the 11 Bayview route. This route operates with two branches: 11A Bayview: Davisville Stn to Steeles via Sunnybrook 11C Bayview: Davisville Stn to Sunnybrook This route is the first mainline east of Yonge Street. While it has somewhat frequent service, it really suffers from heavy traffic for much of its length. The Route      Buses leave Davisville Station by turning left onto Yonge (unsignalized!). The bus then travels east along Davisville. This stretch features apartments west of Mt Pleasant and single-family homes east of it. The bus turns north onto Bayview, with the road here being lined by many small businesses. It's a cute little shopping district! This is where the heavy traffic begins. The bus crosses Eglinton, where there is Line 5 construction ongoing, and ascends a large hill. At Kilgour, we pass CNIB.     All buses divert through Sunnybrook Hospital. Northbound buses stop at the Odette Cancer Research Centre, at...

10 Van Horne

Image
Hey friends! Today we will be taking a look at a short little route that, maybe, should be incorporated into another route. The 10 Van Horne operates with one branch: 10 Van Horne: Don Mills Stn to Victoria Park As we explore the route, we see that while frequency is very good, connections made by the route are not. The Route Eastbound buses depart Don Mills Station via north on Don Mills, travelling around the Peanut. This area has many high-rise apartments and a shopping plaza (that is way too difficult to access by foot). There are more high-rises on Van Horne just after the buses turns east off of Don Mills. The bulk of the route is single-family homes, with a community centre at Lucifer. There are some more apartments at Clipper, and a small shopping plaza at Victoria Park. The route loops clockwise via Van Horne, Victoria Park, Pleasant View and Brian.  Sights to See Fairview Mall Peanut Plaza Subway Connections Don Mills Frequency and Ridership The 10 Van Horne operat...

Detours: Toronto Islands

Image
This post is a little different! As part of my 'Detours' feature, I will be speaking about my trip to the Toronto Island on November 10th, 2020! It's kind of a diary entry of sorts? Forgive the text on pictures, I guess I prioritized my Instagram story over actually taking pictures. They are also all vertical. Oops! Anyways, let's get this started... I made my way downtown for the 8:30 ferry trip. Got my Starbucks on the way! Thanks Breton for recommending the Irish Cream Cold Brew, it was very good! Would recommend, but with the sweet foam to kill some of the harsh coffee taste. Anyways, turns out the 8:30 ferry is the school trip. With the ferry at half capacity, and on hourly schedule, I was concerned I wouldn't get a spot. However, most of the parents in the waiting area just dropped the kids with the teachers there and went off on their day. Anyways, the used one of the larger ferries, either the Sam McBride or the Thomas Rennie. Forgot to check. I also have  a...

9 Bellamy

Image
Today's route is the 9 Bellamy! This is our first mainline Scarborough route. The route operates with one branch: 9 Bellamy: Warden Stn to Scarborough Centre Despite being a mainline route, the 9 Bellamy is one of the least busy of these routes. The Route      This route operates from Warden Station. It provides supplemental service to the 102 Markham Road bus along this busy stretch of St Clair East. This section is mainly low-density, but there are some higher-density pockets at Birchmount, Kennedy and Brimley. At Linden is Scarborough GO Station. The bus turns left onto Kingston Road, before turning left onto McCowan. To note: the stop at Kingston and Neilson is not served by the 9 during afternoon rush hour.      This stretch of McCowan is low-density, and frankly, incredibly quiet. This is because the main busy segment of McCowan does not directly link up. The route passes McCowan District Park, and some towers near Eglinton. The bus head east o...

8 Broadview

Image
Today's route is the 8 Broadview! This short route operates with one branch: 8 Broadview: Broadview Stn to Coxwell While this route is both low-ridership and heavily duplicated by other routes, it still serves its part in the broader TTC network. The Route Northbound buses depart from Broadview and travel alongside the 100 Flemingdon Park, 87 Cosburn and 62 Mortimer. The route is medium density housing throughout, but there is a high density node at Broadview and Mortimer due to a series of apartment towers. Buses round the corner onto O'Connor with the 100 Flemingdon Park, and become the only service on the corridor beyond Pape. The route ends at Coxwell, near a small commercial area, looping clockwise via O'Connor, Coxwell, Plains and Lankin. Sights to See The Danforth Chester Hill Lookout Todmorden Mills Subway Connections Broadview Frequency and Ridership The 8 Broadview operates with a single bus at all hours, producing a simple, clock-face, 30' frequency. Weekday...

7 Bathurst

Image
The next route we are looking at is the 7 Bathurst bus! This route operates with one branch: 7 Bathurst: Bathurst Stn to Steeles Additionally, some garage run-ins operate on a shortened branch: 7S Bathurst: Bathurst Stn to Wilson This is the first mainline route we will be taking a look at. The route is very busy, but suffers greatly from speed, which we will speak about later. The Route Northbound buses depart from the Bathurst Station bus terminal by turning right. Most mainline routes do not turn at all, and the 7 is no different. The 7 has a large loop just south of Steeles, looping clockwise via Fisherville, Carpenter, Steeles, Village Gate, and Greenwin Village. Buses wait for their time at Greenwin Village/Bathurst, before continuing back south on Bathurst Street. Sights to See TTC Hillcrest Complex Cedarvale Ravine Kay Gardner Beltline Trail Baycrest Hospital Little Manila (Bathurst and Wilson) Earl Bales Hinder Property Holocaust Museum Esther Shiner Civic Stadium Subway...

6 Bay

Image
The second route we are going to look at is the 6 Bay! This route has one branch: 6 Bay: Dupont to Queens Quay and Sherbourne This route is quite helpful, but downtown traffic plagues its reliability. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this route has been relatively tolerable and quick. Ridership, however, has taken a significant hit. The Route Northbound buses depart George Brown College's Waterfront campus' stop on Dockside Drive. Buses travel west on Queens' Quay, then north on Bay Street. Passing a number of important destinations, including City Hall and the Eaton Centre, the bus travels through some of the tallest areas of the city. The bus stops in front of Bay Station in the ritzy neighbourhood of Yorkville before turning northwest onto Davenport. Buses end their trips at Davenport and Dupont, halfway through the clockwise loop of Davenport, Dupont, and Bedford.  Bay Street never used to be one through street. Originally, it was a series of discontinuous ro...
